the story tradition tells
Tradition offers him modak and durva grass and asks for a clear path to whatever is being begun — a journey, a study, a marriage, a first day. On Sankashti, those who keep the day watch for the moon: the sighting closes the observance, and the evening's Ganapati puja closes the day.

Some keep a Sankashti fast from morning until moonrise; others simply offer a modak and say the mantra. A fast is one way of keeping his day, never the only one — observe as your health and heart allow.
