Krishna

also known as Kanha, Gopala, Murlidhar, Dwarkadhish and Banke Bihari

Krishna is turned to for devotion, joy, and release from worldly anxiety — the God who answers heaviness with a flute. Many honour him on Thursdays, as a form of Vishnu — a tradition to lean on, never a rule.

the story tradition tells

His birth at midnight in Mathura is celebrated as Janmashtami, when devotees keep vigil until the hour of his birth. In Vrindavan and Mathura the temples fill with kirtan, and offerings of makhan-mishri recall the butter-loving child of Braj.

if you keep a vrat

Those who keep a Janmashtami fast traditionally break it after the evening or midnight aarti, with fruit or makhan-mishri. Kept in full it is a long and lovely vigil; kept simply — a bhajan sung, a sweet offered — it honours the day just as well.

meet Krishna every morning

In the Sankalp app, your morning can open with a darshan of the deity you choose — a painterly portrait, a mantra, a moment before the feed. Tradition suggests; you decide.
