the story tradition tells
The Skanda Sashti observance recalls his six-day battle and victory over the asura Surapadman, celebrated with great fervour at Tiruchendur. Pilgrims carry the kavadi to his six abodes across Tamil Nadu — Palani, Tiruchendur, Swamimalai and the rest — singing 'Vel Vel Muruga' along the way.

Some fast through the six days of Sashti, breaking after the final day's worship; many keep a single evening, or none at all. The kavadi is carried by those who vowed it — everyone else can simply say his name.
