Set by the sun's entry into Makara. Dates follow the tithi at local sunrise — your city can differ by a day.
the story
Makar Sankranti marks the sun's passage into Makara (Capricorn) and the start of Uttarayana, its northward journey. It is one of the few festivals set by the sun rather than the moon, so its date barely shifts each year.
how it’s kept
Bathe at dawn, offer water to the sun, share til-gud (sesame and jaggery), and fly kites. Many give to those in need on this day of turning toward the light.
