Purnima and Amavasya are the two poles of the lunar month — the full moon that closes the bright fortnight and the new moon that closes the dark one. Between them they set the rhythm every other observance keeps time by.
Purnima, the full-moon day, is widely held as a day of completion and gratitude. Many households choose it for a Satyanarayan katha, a temple visit, or a vrat; several of the year's best-loved festivals — Guru Purnima, Sharad Purnima, Kartik Purnima — fall on it. Amavasya, the new-moon day, turns the other way: inward. Across traditions it is kept as a day for remembering ancestors — tarpan, a lamp lit in their name, a quiet meal — and as the still point from which the new month begins. Neither day asks anything of you; a fast, a prayer, or simply noticing the sky are all traditional ways of keeping them, and all of them optional.
