sankashti chaturthi dates 2026

Sankashti Chaturthi falls on the fourth tithi of the waning fortnight, once every lunar month. It is a day many turn to Ganesha — the remover of obstacles — with the traditional observance running from morning into night: those who fast keep it through the day and break it only after sighting the moon, closing with the evening's Ganapati puja. Kept in full, it is a long and lovely vigil; kept simply — a modak offered, the Vakratunda mantra said, a moment before his image — it is honoured just the same. The fast has always been optional; the turning toward him is the observance.

When Sankashti falls on a Tuesday it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi and is held especially dear, above all in Maharashtra, where temple queues at dawn tell you the day before the calendar does. The table marks each Angarki as it comes.

Every month's bright fortnight carries the mirror observance — Vinayaka Chaturthi, listed further down. The Vinayaka Chaturthi of Bhadrapada is Ganesh Chaturthi itself, the festival that brings him home for ten days.

The bright fortnight’s mirror observance — Shukla Chaturthi, traditionally closed with a midday puja rather than a moonrise one. The Vinayaka Chaturthi of Bhadrapada is Ganesh Chaturthi, the festival itself.

sankashti, answered

What is the difference between Sankashti and Vinayaka Chaturthi?
Both are Ganesha's chaturthi. Sankashti falls in the waning (Krishna) fortnight and is traditionally kept until moonrise; Vinayaka falls in the waxing (Shukla) fortnight and closes at midday. Sankashti is the one most monthly vrat traditions follow.
What is Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi?
A Sankashti that falls on a Tuesday — Angaraka's day. Tradition holds it especially fruitful, and it is kept with particular devotion in Maharashtra. It is a naming custom for the coincidence, not a rule; every Sankashti is equally Ganesha's.
Why is the fast broken after moonrise?
The Sankashti vrat is traditionally completed by sighting the moon and offering it arghya before the evening meal. Moonrise on a Krishna chaturthi comes well after sunset and shifts with your city, so families watch for it locally — and many simply close the day with the puja at a comfortable hour.
Do I have to fast on Sankashti?
No. The full moonrise-to-moonrise fast is one form of the observance, and a sweet offered to Ganesha with a short prayer is another. Choose the form that fits your day — the panchang only tells you when the tithi falls.
